Process

Our process spanned 7 weeks, with incremental progress throughout each week.

Ideation & Pitch Presentation - Week 7, 8 & 9

During the ideation process, each of us pitched in a fair amount of concepts to the idea pool. The archive was chosen to be our primary direction. The main subject of the archive would be thrifted clothes from our peers and friends, with the focus being on documenting clothes that were once overlooked and forgotten but have found new homes.

Data Collection - Week 10 & 11

Taking inspiration from Anne Geene’s Book of Plants, we branched out and sourced for other references that were fashion-related and had a higher percentage of images than text.

We proceeded to collect our image data through two methods as we were targeting fellow thrifters in and out of LASALLE. We created a Google Form for non-LASALLE thrifters that included options to upload images with photo-taking guidelines such as full flat-lays and close-ups of details and brand tags. As for peers in school, we were able to reach out to them via messaging.

We organised a collection day and we were able to start photographing the clothing pieces which we then tabulated on a Google Sheet. We kept the sheet orderly with specific columns such as contributors’ names, type of clothing, brand, material, colour and pattern. As we wanted to involve ourselves in the publication, we decided to include our own thrifted clothing pieces as well.

Book and Layouts Creation - Week 12 & 13

First we divided the book and our data into five parts

  • Clothing type
  • Material type
  • Colour
  • Patterns
  • Tags

These parts utilised the data already taken from our results, which we then processed via image editing. We cut out several parts that were remarkable from each outfit and highlighted them in the corresponding sections. We also arranged them to correspond to certain themes, such as cotton material or floral patterns.

Finalisation - Week 14, 15 & 16

In the last few weeks of preparation and finalisation, we combined the feedback and criticism received from Week 14’s Show and Tell, led by Joanne and Vikas, as well as personal consultations with Gideon and Andreas, and turned them into refinements for the final archive book.
